Responsibilities
Unit Overview
The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at GW Hospital is a 48-bed mixed medical-surgical ICU, also referred to as the Medical ICU (MICU). It provides comprehensive critical care to patients with a variety of diagnoses including sepsis, respiratory failure, post-surgical complications, and multi-organ dysfunction. The unit supports a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:2 and is staffed with a multidisciplinary team including intensivists, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and specialists. As part of a Level I Trauma Center, the ICU is integral in managing patients from the Emergency Department, Step-Down Unit, and OR.
Position Summary
The ICU RN delivers expert nursing care to critically ill patients, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
Main Tasks
- Monitor and assess critically ill patients conditions
- Administer medications, titrate drips, and manage complex medical equipment
- Collaborate with intensivists and interdisciplinary teams on patient care plans
- Provide education and emotional support to patients and their families
- Maintain detailed and timely documentation in the EHR system
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and code response teams

Qualifications
Required:
- Current RN license in the District of Columbia or eligibility
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications
- Minimum of 1 year of ICU or critical care experience
Preferred:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) certification
- Experience in a Level I Trauma Center
